Root canal

We do root canal treatment

A root canal clears out an infected tooth from the inside so it can be kept, instead of taken out.

We reply within one to two hours.

Who needs a root canal

When decay or damage reaches the nerve inside a tooth, the tooth becomes infected. That is usually what is behind a toothache that will not settle.

At that point there are two options. The tooth comes out, or the inside of it is cleared and the tooth stays.

A root canal is the second one.

What happens to your tooth

Start to finish, in the order it happens.

  1. First, anaesthetic gel or spray goes on the gum, so you do not feel the injection.

  2. Once you are numb, the tooth is opened to reach the pulp chamber, which is where the nerves are.

  3. The blood vessels and nerve tissue are taken out of the chamber, and the inside of the tooth is irrigated.

  4. When all the dead tissue is out, the canal is filled. That step is called obturation.

  5. Then the tooth gets its final filling on top.

  6. Afterwards you are given antibiotics and painkillers, so post-operative pain is very minimal.

How many visits it takes

Usually one to four visits, depending on the state of the tooth.

Each session is around half an hour.

The tooth is worked on with rotary instruments, which is part of why the sessions are short.

Will it hurt

Anaesthetic gel or spray goes on the gum before the injection, so you do not feel the needle. You are anaesthetised for the treatment itself.

Afterwards you are given antibiotics and painkillers, so post-operative pain is very minimal.

If you want to see what Dr Abaid is looking at while he works, the camera puts your tooth on the screen beside you.

Will it work

It depends on the tooth, and Dr Abaid will tell you which way yours looks before he starts.

Two things carry it. The tooth has to have enough structure left to take a good seal, and it needs a cap over it afterwards to hold it together.

That is why the cap is recommended rather than optional.

Nothing in dentistry works every time. What a root canal does is keep your own tooth, which is usually better than taking it out when the tooth can be saved.

Root canal, or take it out

Tooth removal

Taking the tooth out is quicker and it costs less. From PKR 2,000 against from PKR 7,000.

But the gap is then there, and filling it later means a bridge, which costs more than the root canal would have.

Root canal

A root canal keeps the tooth you already have. Where the tooth can be saved, that is usually the better of the two.

Dr Abaid will look at the tooth and tell you honestly which one it is a case for.

What it costs

From PKR 7,000.

The consultation is PKR 300, the same as any other treatment here.

What the root canal itself comes to depends on the tooth, and Dr Abaid confirms it once he has looked.

Most root canals need a cap afterwards, which is from PKR 5,000.
